So it's Thursday, and when I am close to home I like to stop down and visit the brothers of Grand Island Lodge. Today was the day, and when I got there, one of my dear brothers exclaims, so are you going to wish me a happy birthday, I've been hanging around now for 29,950 days. For some, that would be a strange thing to say, but my buddy Dykeman is one of the most intelligent men I know. Not that he is one of those born smart guys, but he is the most well read man I know. Has an answer to most questions, can strike up a conversation on just about any topic. World population, no problem, ask Dykeman. Any one of the Presidents, what do you want to know? He has just spent his entire life enjoying books. It has make him an intelligent man. He served his country as have many, and was actually born and raised near me, but moved away to make a good living working for the Postal Service. When he retired and moved back "home" he became my traveling companion when I would make my BGP visits in the 90s. I would always look for his critique of my presentation, and if I did a fair job, it meant we would stop for a piece of pie at Jack's in Rapid River, or Pickleman's in Newberry or any one of a dozen favorite places to get peanut butter pie ;-) The point is, Dykeman is 29,950 days old !!! He could have just said I'm 82 and changed topic. Thats not him, he made me think, actually get out my calculator on my smart device (which device he despises) and figure out how many candles I need to get for his cake. He doesn't like long meetings, will never be Master of the Lodge, and has an opinion about everything we do, which is usually a valued opinion.
Generation Gap? Phewy ! Nothing a good game of cribbage can't take care of. Come to think about it, after all the "pointless" hands in my crib left by him, I could have figured that age out in my head. Dykeman, your a sly one and I love you for it brother..... Happy Natal Anniversary.
